My Mission
If you can fill the unforgiving minute With sixty seconds’ worth of distance run, Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it
I fill every minute with sixty seconds' worth of distance run.
Growing up, I read 'If' by Rudyard Kipling much differently. During college, I read this final line as a call to put in the hard work, make every second count, waste nothing. As I get older, have kids, think more about the world and less about business, I have chosen to think of this call to action differently.
I care strongly for what I spend my time and efforts on.
I don't feel like this is asking me to work 24/7 and find 'distance' in one facet of my life. No, I choose to read this as a reminder to remain intentional with everything that I do. If I have a minute with my kids, then that is sixty seconds of being the best dad that I am capable of being. Am I taking a minute to learn a new skill? Then that is sixty seconds of devoting myself fully to the joy of learning that skill. Am I taking a minute to breathe, and relax? Then I will spend sixty seconds to allow my body and mind to rest.
I have empathy and respect for everything around me.
It was also easy to read the promise "Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it" as a reward. Being this perfect stoic will put the whole world under your control. This is an interpretation I also disagree with. I read this as being a steward of the Earth and a servant everything that's in it. As such, it is my responsibility to care for everything and anyone that is within my sphere of influence.
